There is so much wrong with this Supreme Court we’re saddled with that it’s hard to know where to start. So, let’s focus on the latest atrocious ruling via shadow docket issued by the 5 right-wing extremists. The decision handed down on February 7 will keep in place an Alabama congressional map through the 2022 elections that had been deemed racist by two district courts.

This is a terrible, possibly permanent blow to voting right which, in effect, disenfranchises Black Alabamians. It does not guarantee that the Court will continue down this path, but my guess is it will.
Two questions:
1. Do you think this vote is made worse by the fact that at least one and as many as four (don’t forget about Clarence Thomas) of these right-wing justices are illegitimate?
2. Do you think there is a remedy or remedies that President Biden and/or the Democratic majority in the Senate should pursue? It seems to me that doing nothing places Democracy in even greater danger than it’s already in.
Very disturbing. I tend to take Sherilyn Ifels advice on all things Supreme Court. She is the past leader of NAACP - NDL and she pushing for professional ethics rules (like every other professional organization) as a start. Wouldn't that include Clarence Thomas having to recuse himself on loads of cases due to the conflict his wife creates by her far right agenda? (And as much as we might not like her, it's really him that needs going after.)
The quick solution would be for Mr.Biden to appoint three more Justices to the Court. McConnell would already be working on this were the tables turned.
2. Of course. The court must be expanded as well as have new rules imposed on it - term limits and ethics rules & a way to monitor those and hold violators responsible. Also, impeachment of Kavanaugh.
The Court is in trouble. It’s legitimacy is slipping away. Not unlike in FDR’s time. The Court should be expanded. A back-up plan is to consider impeachment of Kavanaugh in light of the sham ‘investigation’ done in response to Blasey-Ford. We need more Senate seats. Also, this situation is a lesson in the importance of SCOTUS. The R’s knew this;it is their way to assure minority rule for themselves (a form of apartheid) as the country’s demographics is changed. D’s never saw the Court’s importance. Now we should/do. So, to move ahead, more Senate Seats! Also, such would make Manchin/Sinema irrelevant.
Thomas and Kavanaugh should not be on the bench. Period. Gorsuch and Barrett's seats legitimately belong to appointees by Obama and Biden respectively. When I am asked if I hate anyone in the world, my mind immediately goes to McConnell for his despicable actions getting Gorsuch and Barrett on the bench. Roberts refuses to create ethics rules. Congress must write rules imposing strict standards on the justices that prohibit them from speaking before partisan groups or hearing cases that pose a conflict of interest.
I just don't know if the Democrats will get anything passed unless they somehow create a large majority in the Senate. With the overwhelming dominance in numbers by "Red States" (not in terms of population), there is a systemic imbalance that prevents that is all but certain to prevent that from happening. In turn, that makes Supreme Court reform/expansion (which would be the only way to correct the insane imbalance on the High Court) just about impossible. The risk of course is by doing nothing (as seems to be the desire of Senators Manchin and Sinema), the Supreme Court will risk being seen as illegitimate by a growing section of the country, and I would submit that many already do feel that way. If that opinion takes firmer hold, then our legal system, which underpins everything that this country does, is toast.
Turning to this vote specifically, it depressed but didn't surprise me. The Republicans put Gorsuch, Kavanagh and Barrett on the Court to do exactly what they are doing--end the national right to abortion, end the Voting Rights Act (and let's not ignore the despicable role that John Roberts played in this), wipe out federal environmental regulations, etc.
We need more liberal- or even fair minded- Justices!! The fact that AC Barrett told an audience that SCOTUS were NOT “political hacks” is another of the conservative’s Big Lies.

It is time to expand the Supreme Court and also rethink and revise the lifetime commitment. When you have some one like Mitch McConnell who seems to be the “OZ” behind the curtain on this and so many problems that affect women and race and disenfranchised people where is the justice! It is time to revise the length time for many elected officials who seem to serve term after term in office! Times have changed since our democracy was founded.
There is no doubt that there are four Justices that do not belong on the SCOTUS. Anyone who has been paying attention or knows history would agree. It seems the remedy is to expand the court, before the mid-terms. It should have been one of many I realize of Biden's top priorities. Instead, he gave it to a committee to study. Dumb.
It's very disturbing. It also feels debilitating. I believe we need term limits and/or three more justices added. I imagine each of these routes would be quite a battle. However, democracy loving citizens are going to have to fight to save our country – one way, or another.
First, McConnell & his stupid made-up rule of 'no SCOTUS appointed during last year of term,' which went by the wayside when TFG appointed THREE, one just before the election! We feel overwhelmed with the onslaught at times. Didn't we already pass lots of voting rights legislation, to stop gerrymandering, etc?
I think that is the intention of this wholesale assault on decency. Know that most of us feel this. We hear that the "country is divided,". That sounds like a 50-50 split. Actually, about 17% of people are engaged in the continung assaults on our communities.
Context is important. Voting Rights Act passed in 1965. The Roberts Court dismantled it, one blow at a time, and it brought us to this congressional gerrymandering in Alabama. There seems to be no end to the $ for the assault.

I think President Biden should nominate four more people (of diverse backgrounds including someone from the LGBTQ community) in addition to the Black woman he will chose and dare the U.S. Senate not to confirm all of them. Yes, this vote is definitely made worse that there are several illegitimate justices. The SCOTUS should be expanded to at least 13 justices. In my opinion, it would be best to have as many as several dozen justices (with term limits). With only 9 justices, they are not able to hear nearly as many cases as they should be able to do.

Since Impeaching the blatant illegal acts of a “president” even didn’t qualify as censure, I am truly lost. I support term limits for SCOTUS, but am cynical enough to believe that even if such a law were passed, current judges would be grandfathered (pun intended). I also believe in ethics rules with teeth. It's ridiculous that justices basically police themselves, answering to no higher authority when it comes to recusal/conflict of interest.

Kavanaugh and Thomas are particularly troubling to me - everything surrounding Kavanaugh’s appointment reeks of corruption from Kennedy stepping down, the payoff of significant debt, and the sexual assault “investigation”. But I don’t foresee that being addressed. Re Thomas, I’m keeping my eye on what more turns up about his wife’s (and his?) involvement with J6 insurrection, as well as his communications with Desantis. Those could potentially be very problematic for him. For #2, SCOTUS needs overhauled, including expansion (and the federal judiciary in general for that matter). But I don’t see expansion happening, at least not before mid-terms. Better chance at ethics/term limit reform, though not holding my breath over that, either. Unfortunately, the upcoming elections are going to have to be by the hard way - enormous turnout in spite of enormous obstacles in some states - to expand the margins in Congress to be able to get these other things done.
Can the Supreme Court be made right at this point? It would be nice to think that it would be as easy as adding more justices to even out the playing field. But is it even possible for that to happen? If it is, do it yesterday. And of course it didn't help that the illegitimate justices had a say in the Alabama issue. They are not there to serve justice, only themselves and the goals of the extreme right.
It would seem to me the only way forward is to gain more seats in the Senate. No Republican is going to change anything about the present court. There is no mistaking the knee on our necks now with the Alabama ruling. Actually I find the politicizing of Scotus terrifying but I am not so sure the American public at large might even be concerned, and that's even more terrifying!

I wholeheartedly think Congress should require SCOTUS to abide by Ethics rules (laws) which would get Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh off the Court since they prove-ably lied to Congress. It’s an interesting rabbit hole and a distraction. Biden needs to continue to appoint lower court judges and local elections matter. That’s where the focus should be.

I agree that SCOTUS must be expanded to undo the damage by McConnell, adding legislation for ethics rules to be required. I’m in favor of term limits but I’m not sure if it requires a constitutional amendment, which is not going to happen anytime soon. The Republicans are engaged in an all out assault on the U.S. Constitution & Bill of Rights! Palin v. the New York Times is going after freedom of the press, Florida Man legislation to prevent the right of assembly for protests and now right-wing insurgents are being bankrolled in infiltrating Canadian borders to organize blockades to prevent people & goods crossing over our border! The GOP is hell bent on an autocratic ruling class and the rest of us need to fight fire with fire! We have been screaming about this for over a year and we need grass roots organizations to form for protecting U.S. citizens, getting everyone to Vote Blue in 2022 to have the big majorities needed at all levels of government so that we can stop all the nationalist & racist activities in our society. Very disturbing. I tend to take Sherilyn Ifels advice on all things Supreme Court. She is the past leader of NAACP - NDL and she pushing for professional ethics rules (like every other professional organization) as a start. Wouldn't that include Clarence Thomas having to recuse himself on loads of cases due to the conflict his wife creates by her far right agenda? (And as much as we might not like her, it's really him that needs going after.)
The quick solution would be for Mr.Biden to appoint three more Justices to the Court. McConnell would already be working on this were the tables turned.

The Court is in trouble. It’s legitimacy is slipping away. Not unlike in FDR’s time. The Court should be expanded. A back-up plan is to consider impeachment of Kavanaugh in light of the sham ‘investigation’ done in response to Blasey-Ford. We need more Senate seats. Also, this situation is a lesson in the importance of SCOTUS. The R’s knew this;it is their way to assure minority rule for themselves (a form of apartheid) as the country’s demographics is changed. D’s never saw the Court’s importance. Now we should/do. So, to move ahead, more Senate Seats! Also, such would make Manchin/Sinema irrelevant.
Thomas and Kavanaugh should not be on the bench. Period. Gorsuch and Barrett's seats legitimately belong to appointees by Obama and Biden respectively. When I am asked if I hate anyone in the world, my mind immediately goes to McConnell for his despicable actions getting Gorsuch and Barrett on the bench. Roberts refuses to create ethics rules. Congress must write rules imposing strict standards on the justices that prohibit them from speaking before partisan groups or hearing cases that pose a conflict of interest.
I just don't know if the Democrats will get anything passed unless they somehow create a large majority in the Senate. With the overwhelming dominance in numbers by "Red States" (not in terms of population), there is a systemic imbalance that prevents that is all but certain to prevent that from happening. In turn, that makes Supreme Court reform/expansion (which would be the only way to correct the insane imbalance on the High Court) just about impossible. The risk of course is by doing nothing (as seems to be the desire of Senators Manchin and Sinema), the Supreme Court will risk being seen as illegitimate by a growing section of the country, and I would submit that many already do feel that way. If that opinion takes firmer hold, then our legal system, which underpins everything that this country does, is toast.
Turning to this vote specifically, it depressed but didn't surprise me. The Republicans put Gorsuch, Kavanagh and Barrett on the Court to do exactly what they are doing--end the national right to abortion, end the Voting Rights Act (and let's not ignore the despicable role that John Roberts played in this), wipe out federal environmental regulations, etc.
Adding justices, and fast, is the only way. Could they be confirmed? Expanding Democratic margin in the Senate is essential

Pack the court
It is time to expand the Supreme Court and also rethink and revise the lifetime commitment. When you have some one like Mitch McConnell who seems to be the “OZ” behind the curtain on this and so many problems that affect women and race and disenfranchised people where is the justice! It is time to revise the length time for many elected officials who seem to serve term after term in office! Times have changed since our democracy was founded.
There is no doubt that there are four Justices that do not belong on the SCOTUS. Anyone who has been paying attention or knows history would agree. It seems the remedy is to expand the court, before the mid-terms. It should have been one of many I realize of Biden's top priorities. Instead, he gave it to a committee to study. Dumb.
It's very disturbing. It also feels debilitating. I believe we need term limits and/or three more justices added. I imagine each of these routes would be quite a battle. However, democracy loving citizens are going to have to fight to save our country – one way, or another.
First, McConnell & his stupid made-up rule of 'no SCOTUS appointed during last year of term,' which went by the wayside when TFG appointed THREE, one just before the election! (if memory serves, which it doesn't always)! So there are two sexual predators, one with absolutely NO experience & the last one was 'paid,' unless I'm mixing my predators with crooks....hard to tell.
It seems like, at the least, the Court should be expanded or, at the VERY least, have term limits. I'd go for expansion.

We feel overwhelmed with the onslaught at times. Didn't we already pass lots of voting rights legislation, to stop gerrymandering, etc?
I think that is the intention of this wholesale assault on decency. Know that most of us feel this. We hear that the "country is divided,". That sounds like a 50-50 split. Actually, about 17% of people are engaged in the continung assaults on our communities.
Context is important. Voting Rights Act passed in 1965. The Roberts Court dismantled it, one blow at a time, and it brought us to this congressional gerrymandering in Alabama. There seems to be no end to the $ for the assault.
We need Transparency. Honesty, about who is paying a minority to continuously pose as a mob or militia, the intent is to makethe majority of us overwhelmed and exhausted.
We need to rely on our system to prosecute, asap.

Yes, this vote is definitely made worse that there are several illegitimate justices. The SCOTUS should be expanded to at least 13 justices. In my opinion, it would be best to have as many as several dozen justices (with term limits). With only 9 justices, they are not able to hear nearly as many cases as they should be able to do.

Accountability doesn’t seem to exist for certain people but it certainly does for millions of us others. Perhaps this is how those in third-world countries feel? Since Impeaching the blatant illegal acts of a “president” even didn’t qualify as censure, I am truly lost. With all the powerful intellects in a much more affective political position to act, what is there to do but write to representatives, and to concur with worthy opinions such at Mary Trump’s?
I support term limits for SCOTUS, but am cynical enough to believe that even if such a law were passed, current judges would be grandfathered (pun intended). I also believe in ethics rules with teeth. It's ridiculous that justices basically police themselves, answering to no higher authority when it comes to recusal/conflict of interest.

Kavanaugh and Thomas are particularly troubling to me - everything surrounding Kavanaugh’s appointment reeks of corruption from Kennedy stepping down, the payoff of significant debt, and the sexual assault “investigation”. But I don’t foresee that being addressed. Re Thomas, I’m keeping my eye on what more turns up about his wife’s (and his?) involvement with J6 insurrection, as well as his communications with Desantis. Those could potentially be very problematic for him. For #2, SCOTUS needs overhauled, including expansion (and the federal judiciary in general for that matter). But I don’t see expansion happening, at least not before mid-terms. Better chance at ethics/term limit reform, though not holding my breath over that, either. Unfortunately, the upcoming elections are going to have to be by the hard way - enormous turnout in spite of enormous obstacles in some states - to expand the margins in Congress to be able to get these other things done.
Can the Supreme Court be made right at this point? It would be nice to think that it would be as easy as adding more justices to even out the playing field. But is it even possible for that to happen? If it is, do it yesterday. And of course it didn't help that the illegitimate justices had a say in the Alabama issue. They are not there to serve justice, only themselves and the goals of the extreme right.
Why is a judge called a justice if he or she will continue to prevent justice from being applied equally among our citizens?

It would seem to me the only way forward is to gain more seats in the Senate. No Republican is going to change anything about the present court. There is no mistaking the knee on our necks now with the Alabama ruling. Actually I find the politicizing of Scotus terrifying but I am not so sure the American public at large might even be concerned, and that's even more terrifying!

I wholeheartedly think Congress should require SCOTUS to abide by Ethics rules (laws) which would get Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh off the Court since they prove-ably lied to Congress. While I agree with expanding the Court, I think it may be too complicated for just the Democrats to do.

It’s an interesting rabbit hole and a distraction. Biden needs to continue to appoint lower court judges and local elections matter. That’s where the focus should be.

2. Expanding the court is one of a number of things the Democrats should be doing but seem to have no interest in. I’m not seeing how they keep Congress next year.

I agree that SCOTUS must be expanded to undo the damage by McConnell, adding legislation for ethics rules to be required. I’m in favor of term limits but I’m not sure if it requires a constitutional amendment, which is not going to happen anytime soon. The Republicans are engaged in an all out assault on the U.S. Constitution & Bill of Rights! Palin v. the New York Times is going after freedom of the press, Florida Man legislation to prevent the right of assembly for protests and now right-wing insurgents are being bankrolled in infiltrating Canadian borders to organize blockades to prevent people & goods crossing over our border! The GOP is hell bent on an autocratic ruling class and the rest of us need to fight fire with fire! We have been screaming about this for over a year and we need grass roots organizations to form for protecting U.S. citizens, getting everyone to Vote Blue in 2022 to have the big majorities needed at all levels of government so that we can stop all the nationalist & racist activities in our society. The time to act is NOW!

Back in 1944, America had a German man who was Gen. Dwight David Eisenhower. He was involved in the liberation of Paris, France from the damned Nazis, who were told by Adolf Hitler to cause as much damage as possible. No damned Trump has ever served in any military, anywhere in the world, at any time. The draft-dodging SOB was put in charge of our men and women who are members of the military. While the whole world watched, he incited people to create an insurrection in our Capitol Building. Now we seem to be too feeble-minded as to what to do about America's first dictator. We cannot even bring ourselves to slap his wrist. The insulting blabber-mouthed 'sucker and loser' idiot was disgraceful to all the men and women who served and died for our freedoms. Now this Mafia/Putin-loving bastard wants to destroy us. The military takes an oath to serve the president. This needs to be changed to read as follows: Members of the military are sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States and they are to obey the orders of the President, but only so long as those orders are consistent in serving America and not aiding the adversaries of this nation. I once posted information about the horror and wickedness involved during a pre-birth abortion. I got a steaming reply from an Australian man who was single and 43 years old. I don't know what his problem was, but I will now tell you a tale and I am serious--not joking. I am a man and I had two abortions in May, 2018. I was fortunate that the ER surgeon knew what had caused my 'twisted' gut'. It was caused by my having received 40 radiation treatments for the prostate cancer I had about ten years before this happened. My surgery was canceled, twice. Remember the space flights that were aborted or canceled? Same thing. No sexual pleasure was ever involved in the production of this ironic tale. Neither Kavanaugh nor the idiots in Texas could do a damned thing about it.
