Thanks for this, Mary, I don’t understand why so little is being made of all these attacks on women’s rights. History shows that a descent into fascism is preceded by motions to return women to the kitchen and child raising and subordination. Unless, of course, you are a Handmaiden of the Lord and serve on the Supreme Court. Great place for her to enforce women’s loss of rights. Aaaarrrrrggghhh!

The issue is Christian Nationalists using our government to force us to follow thier extremist views. They can't be happy living in a country that allows you to worship as you choose, they want to force everyone to follow their beliefs.

Ask yourself, ‘Which candidate, Biden or trump, comes closest to giving me what I want?’

If what you want is the continuation of democracy, vote Blue.

If you want a theocracy led by white Christian nationalists, vote Red.

By the way, my cognitive test says: Person, Woman, Man, Camera, Prison.

Heather, hilarious! Unfortunately, we've got a lot of pseudo-christians who don't even believe in Jesus's command to love one's neighbor as one loves oneself or care for those who are poor, oppressed, imprisoned, etc. Those rich white pseudo-christian men have dropped all the positives about christianity and substituted hate, anger, fear, resentment, along with greed and bullying. That is not a religion anyone should follow, ever!

What is the difference between GOP extremists and the Taliban? Nothing.

The difference is the Taliban have full control of Afghanistan and the GOP has not got that here…yet. If we elect Democrats to majority in all three elective bodies, we may yet hold them off. Then the test will what do we do with our victory.

Claire, it seems one of the problems is that women have been programmed from near birth to defer to any male who is present. Even teachers often favored boys over girls. I was lucky being in a family of girls and my dad was not into "ruling the roost." My female teachers were excellent as were most of the males. Some did try their male privilege on me, but I must have shown my displeasure on my face, that is, when I was not standing up for myself. I think that is why I was not bullied as so many of my friends were, usually when I was not around. I am not large and was visually impaired. Maybe the boys had learned about not hitting girls with glasses or something. We need to do a better job of raising our girls to be more assertive even if they get called "b**ches" and other equally offensive terms. We women need to start demanding our rights and push our fellow women to stop voting for the creepy men and their female surrogates who would force births, restrict our movements, and otherwise be permitted to think they have a right to control our lives. We need more groups like "The Seneca Project" everywhere and find ways to introduce the Fox Not Nearly News women to ideas of their independence and that women are not inferior to men, not even in the Gospels or in Judaism and Islam and other religions either. Any religion that puts women down is not worthy of consideration by women. We can fix this.

It's noteworthy that the first video is a colloquy by two white men. You can glean the mental harumpfing, unspoken, as they gauge themselves the legal scholars on the subject. I know nothing about Mr. Snead but it's reminiscent of the men on the supreme court (sic) spitballing hypotheticals regarding ratifying Donald's demand for full immunity. It's also interesting that Mr. Snead falls on the side of the Commerce Clause of the Constitution (relates to travel for an abortion) and says nothing about founding the right to abortion upon the 4th Amendment and the 14th Amendment as the proper basis recognizing the federal right to privacy "in their person", thus the commerce clause doesn't come into effect.

Claire, how do you feel about women’s rights for safe spaces, private dressing rooms and women only sports?

Expand full comment

Hi, Sheila,

Not sure what you mean about "feel." Emotionally, when our rights are being attacked and the system is trying to pull us back into the 19th century and we are asked to consider transgender males as equal to ourselves in sports (weird), I feel very angry. I think that our rights need protecting. We need systems that support our safety, like private dressings rooms, and laws in-place which give transgender people leagues of their own. Is this what you mean? How do you feel and think about these issues?

Expand full comment

Perhaps I should have asked for your “opinion”. The party in charge supports the movement to subjugate women into accepting the perverted whims of men. I would prefer to see this writer and others discuss the topic of women’s rights more robustly including the difficult task of self reflection within the party they support. If women were to truly come together and support each others body autonomy, rights to privacy and protection from abusive men, we need to expose all who hurt. Not just the one we hate.

Expand full comment

The GOP agenda is to put women back to prior to 1921. Take away their healthcare, their vote, their jobs. America can't let that happen. They want to end public schools so that only affluent white Republican people can have the proscribed "education".

We can't let them turn America into a Russia, China, Iran, or North Korea. That seems to be Donald's vision, a nation of MAGAs that kill the freedom of everyone else before they snuff out their lives. Donald must be defeated and silenced, along with all the MAGA

I know you're posing a rhetorical question but here's a real-life answer: lots of people. I was born and raised in IN, currently live in KS, and have also lived in LA, MS, and KY. From what I saw, there are lots of people whose worldview is mostly shaped by hearsay from neighbors, pronouncements from the pulpit, and whatever headline is in their face when they checkout at the grocery store. Easily 90% of my neighbors and coworkers in each of those locations had read fewer than 2 books in the last five years of their lives. Many of them (like myself) grew up in an America where white men in suits were usually granted unquestioned authority; when they spoke, the rest of us listened and believed.

Didn't mean to deliver a sermon, but your question touched a nerve because I'm terrified by how many people either don't know or don't care enough about democracy to do more than listen and accept what politicians tell them.

Great to hear of Project 2025 being talked about and the horrors that are awaiting the American people of the Heritage Foundation succeeds!

I do believe a more accurate name for the dangerous, dubious to American’s wellbeing needs to be amended to: The Horror Heritage Foundation. For most of what they have been instigating has been dismantling what’s been the best, most honorable in our national heritage, and promoting in its place damaging to democracy or dangerous to freedoms and liberty. Promoting restrictions harmful of racial, sexist, nature. And fostering dubious religiosity that has no place in a healthy society as it promotes theocracy of government.

This is how I would have responded to Senator Johnson:

It is a lie that the termination of a pregnancy should be adjudicated by law.

This is healthcare. This is between the woman, her doctor and anyone else the woman wants included in the discussion.

If a patient is diagnosed with cancer. There will be a discussion on how to proceed. There will likely be many options. There is not a law that states “this particular cancer is needed for a study that will lead to a cure for millions of people. Therefore there is only one option. The cancer needs to be removed intact, without radiation or chemo treatment, with the best possible attempt for the patient’s welfare. The possibility of a breakthrough in cancer treatment takes precedence.”

Pregnancy is not black and white. A woman may be late for her period and even test positive on a pregnancy test. But the zygote may not implant properly and get sloughed off. Some might call this an abortion. It may be ectopic, stuck in the fallopian tube. It may even turn out that one of the twin fetuses is not viable and needs to be terminated to save the life of the other fetus and the mother’s as well.

The problem with allowing the courts to decide is that, unless a judge is a medical doctor, that judge has not been trained to be a doctor and most importantly has NEVER TAKEN THE HIPPOCRATIC OATH. How can that judge be able to make a medical decision without being required to make the life of the patient the priority.

Take this decision out of the hands of legislators, lawyers, judges and even the good citizens of this country. They are not ready nor equipped to be responsible for healthcare decisions. If any agency is needed to make the decision, it is the American Medical Association

Expand full comment

No agency is needed. I’m unimpressed with hospital panels who review and then deny women an abortion. These panels seem to have no urgency in issuing a ruling and can take days. I doubt the AMA would be any better.

Republicans lawmakers have proven they can’t be trusted to protect pregnant people. First they didn’t listen to medical experts and they passed laws to ban abortion with useless exceptions. Next, they hear the same horror stories we all heard and they did nothing to fix it. Now they refuse to pass laws to safeguard IVF and contraceptives because they say those things aren’t in danger — which is a lie. This is the same lie they told us when we warned that Roe would be overturned. And then it was.

v

Women don’t need an agency or any outsider to make healthcare decisions for us. We trust women to raise children. We should trust women to decide when, and if, they have children.

The exceptions aren’t working or rather they are working as intended: to deny access to an abortion. But really there should not be abortion bans, then we won’t need exceptions.

No woman who wants to be pregnant stays pregnant for months on end and then whimsically gets an abortion. No one. Ever. This fictional whimsy abortion isn’t something that warrants a law to ban abortion in the third trimester (or after X weeks) when the ban puts so many women at risk who have a doomed and dangerous pregnancy. Women should decide.

Abortion on demand and without apology. It just works.

Expand full comment

Exactly! That’s what I meant. The AMA backs up that it is up to the woman and her provider.

But I also agree that in the end it’s the woman’s decision.

It is not a decision to be made on a case by case basis. It’s a one time decision to get all government out of women’s healthcare decisions.

Politicians practicing medicine without a medical license, and obviously in the absence of medical obstetrical degree, internship, experience appropriate as OBGYN, is a heinous crime and sin committed against women. This is what a political party is doing And Promoting as Platform, worse, actually doing to citizens in states, that vote them into State government offices. The very fact this is being allowed to happen in the U.S. in the 21st century is criminal.

Expand full comment

I agree completely. It is appalling that women have to explain this issue to our elected representatives. But I’ve watched some of the hearings in the House and Senate with disgust. Examples: Senator Cruz left the room when a woman from his state testified about how the TX abortion bans nearly killed her. (It is NOT the first time he hasn’t shown up for hearings like this one.) LA Senator Kennedy was asking ethical questions about a hypothetical woman at 34 weeks wanting to end her pregnancy just because she didn’t want the baby. But he didn’t want to hear the answer: his hypothetical is unrealistic.

The Republicans act as though abortion bans are no big deal and woman either aren’t at risk or not worth protecting. I guess Republicans view pregnant women like busses: if this one breaks down or passes, another will be along to take its place.

But, to my way of thinking, Democrats are making a mistake by not competing for every single goddamn vote in every precinct in the country. Of course, it is of the utmost importance to keep Don Felonious out of the White House. But, how are the Democrats ever going to break the stranglehold the Regressive Party has on red states if they do not even compete for them? The other side has a convicted felon at the top of the ticket, for chrissakes. If Democrats are not going to fight for every vote now, when will they?
