Lovely. Thank you for sharing! I took my 5 year old sister to see A Funny Thing…had no idea what it was about. I was 15. The next morning, my dad asked her what was wrong and she said, “I had a dream I was a virgin!” My father got angry, but the rest of us laughed so hard! From then on I had to okay the movies we saw with him! 🤪

Mary, your threefer is great! I especially agree with the musicals! I grew up in Miami and enjoyed many concerts, musicals, and other wonderful performances. But, nothing compares to Broadway! My mom and I would fly up to NYC with friends for the week of the tree lighting. We always made a point to see a couple of plays and also the Rockettes! My grandmother’s sister was a Rockette way, way back. Imagine that! I love Sondheim and saw Forum twice, once with Nathan Lane and Mark Linn-Baker. They were hilarious! Second time, Whoopi was starring. Loved it! I saw so many wonderful plays in NYC. Thanks for the memories!

I adore musical theatre, but more than that I love words. I was a voracious reader from my earliest years. Growing up, we got the Sunday NY Times delivered with 2 copies of the magazine section, so both of my parents would have their own Sunday NYT crossword puzzle. Later they added a third for my older sister. When my mother died, I inherited her magazine and started my lifelong addiction to crossword puzzles and word games.

So it’s not surprising that my first exposure to Stephen Sondheim was as a crossword puzzle creator. His were some of the first cryptic crosswords I attempted.

I, later, discovered that this incredible wordsmith was also the the lyricist for West Side Story and Gypsy. By then, I was enamored with his shows from Candide to Company to A Little Night Music.

He was a genius and an inspiration. May his memory be a blessing.

I grew up on eastern LI and we called it "the city," too. On special days, such as going to see "Jesus Christ Superstar" with my father, he would drive into the city. He took me to see "Pippin" around this time, too. Otherwise, it was a long ride on the LIRR. Sidebar: do you have any favorite restaurants in Queens? I live here and while there is an abundance of restaurants and cuisines, where are the best? (I ask this of anyone who even mentions Queens. Thank you.)

Although I have lived most of my adult life in California, I still feel that my heart is in NY. I grew up about a mile from the "city line" and for me and my friends, as for you and yours, Manhattan was always "The City." Thank you for reminding me of those happy memories of crowding on buses and subways with matinee tickets in hand.
