In my lifetime, I saw this guy as:

1. The racket-busting DA.

2. Il Duce -- the Mayor who waged war on squeegee men and let cops sodomize and shoot people

3. AMERICA'S MAYOR after 9/11.

4. The Senate candidate whose entire vocabulary was "Noun. Verb. 9/11."

5. Trump's Consigliere

6. The crazy man in front of the landscaper and the judge.

7. The insurrectionist

8. The lying racist.

9. The cowardly bully.

Wow.

These days, I see him mostly as that annoying elderly uncle who you HAVE to invite to Thanksgiving and Christmas, who sits there at the table, whining about libtards, spoiled rotten kids, twerking, how tough he was in his day, his glorious achievements for which he was unrewarded, how nobody shows him respect and comes to see him at the assisted-living home, the lousy dinner cooking, and his goiter.

Expand full comment

Let's not forget that the crazy man in front of the landscaper has also been a raging alcoholic since he lost his Senate bid.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I just added that...actually, I wasn't aware of his alcoholism until fairly recently, so it wasn't as big a thing for me to think about.

Once I learned of it, I was FAR from surprised. It actually explains a great deal.

I wonder how long it will take the jury to decide on the damages?

Expand full comment

Alcohol does some very very bad things to normal people. It can be truly terrifying when paired with psychologically aberrant old men. Rudy scared me even when he was young and (sort of) sober.

Well said 🤔👌🖖

I'm a fourth-generation New Yorker on my father's side.

I am EXTREMELY familiar with Rudy in all of his varieties.

Pointing out his raging alcoholism is important. That much alcohol for that long -- changes the brain. The Republicans, especially Trump and Rudi, shouldn’t be criticizing the current President about dementia as that’s about the only excuse Trump and Rudi have to get out of paying 100’s and 10’s of millions of dollars respectively.

Yes, liquor is incredibly destructive.

I self-medicated all through college with liquor, and got flung out of parties for anti-social behavior.

I was trying to induce an early cirrhosis of the liver.

Now I never drink at all, not even at Christmas.

Don't be too proud of what I'm saying in this thread.

Hated him as NYC Mayor—and his attempts to be "fun" by dressing up in drag for SNL, a Washington Press Club Roast, the Rockettes, VICTOR/VICTORIA, and so on so did not work.

I'm sure he thought it was "fun" when he went after Borat's daughter, too! (Yes, that's an actor pretending to be the daughter of a fictional Kazak fictional journalist—still, I don't think Giuliani was in on the joke.)

The only good thing he did as New York Mayor was renovate the playgrounds that Robert Moses built, making them modern and interactive, and removing the iron monkey grille artwork from the ones in Harlem.

He was "America's Mayor" only from 9/11 until he yielded office that New Year's Eve. Nor did that involve very much than going to funerals and talking tough. Our dog Oscar, the Easygoing Blue Doberman, could have been "America's Mayor" if he was serving in the role.

And he was a far nicer person...he got along with all the people and dogs he met, never bit anything, and picked up possums he met in the backyard. He'd carry them over to us, place them at our feet, and start washing them...they were his "pet possums."

Expand full comment

Does Oscar want to move to NYC? I think right now he stands a good chance of primarying Eric Adams! 😁

Expand full comment

I wish Oscar could.

He passed away in 2011.

The funniest thing Oscar did was the possum routine, of course. Second funniest was his response to cold weather. Being a Blue Doberman, he had less fur than other Dobies. He would take his dog blanket in his mouth, flip it in the air like a pizza, let it land on his back like Seabiscuit, walk in a circle, then lie down on his dog bed.

His BFF Kaya, a black Dobie, realized that she could get under the blanket if she got on the bed ahead of him and it would cover her as well.

They played tug-of-war with a small rope all the time, until Kaya quite literally dropped dead on a friend's lawn of a heart attack. After that, Oscar stood in the living room with his rope in his mouth, wondering where his buddy was. It was sad. We got him a new friend, Monster the Mighty Moose...but Oscar died before they could really bond.

All the Dobies my wife ever had are buried at a friend's "Boot Hill" up in the Catskills along with his Dobies, as most were related.

Expand full comment

That's so sad—we'd had cats die on us, including one orange boy stray, Fireball, who was still a kitten when he ran up to me on my way in, I went to the stairs to tell my wife I was home...then turned around and found him lying dead on the floor, just like that.

The vet did an autopsy on him and told us he'd had some kind of heart disease that male orange cats sometimes get where their hearts just freeze up, and it's very hard to diagnose until it kills them....

Expand full comment

Pets are not pets.

They are our companions.

We had a similar problem with one of our orange cats, Nomad the Cat, our first (Official name: Harry A. Smith, after a turn-of-the-century wheeler-dealer who bought up typewriters from bankrupt companies and sold them under his own name). He was a stray that we adopted. He had white stripes and a crazed expression.

He was a funny cat with a lot of personality. He liked to jump on people while they were on the phone, hide under the blankets until my brother walked by and then go WHAP! with his paw to set off a chase around the apartment, and loved going to our place in the country. When we'd go back, he'd meow piteously. We knew how he felt.

---"Rudy Giuliani Is My Father. Please, Everyone, Vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris."

---by Caroline Rose Giuliani, Vanity Fair - October 15th , 2020

"I have a difficult confession—something I usually save for at least the second date. My father is Rudy Giuliani. We are multiverses apart, politically and otherwise. I’ve spent a lifetime forging an identity in the arts separate from my last name, so publicly declaring myself as a “Giuliani” feels counterintuitive, but I’ve come to realize that none of us can afford to be silent right now. The stakes are too high...

If we remove ourselves from the fight, our country will be in freefall...If I, after decades of despair over politics, can engage in our democracy to meet this critical moment, I know you can too."

I looked her up on Wikipedia...here's what I found, verbatim:

Giuliani is a filmmaker, writer, and director creating work focusing on mental health and human sexuality.[16][17] Giuliani began her work in the film industry as a production assistant in Hollywood, working on the American Broadcasting Company's 2012-2013 supernatural drama 666 Park Avenue and 2013-2014 sitcom Trophy Wife, and HBO's 2013-2014 sitcom Hello Ladies.[3][18][15] After working as a production assistant, she became the assistant of Steve Beeks, the Co-President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of Lionsgate.[3][15] She later worked for Gotham Group as an assistant to producer Jeremy Bell.[3][15] She was promoted by Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and began running her own office as a junior manager and television coordinator.[3] After leaving Gotham, she worked as the director's assistant on Netflix's 2019 romantic comedy Someone Great.[3][18]

In 2020, she created the psychological thriller film Or (Someone) Else about a woman struggling in an abusive relationship and the mental health ramifications of repressed anger.[3]

Giuliani is pansexual[19] and polyamorous.[20][21] She previously identified as bisexual.[22][23]

On August 4, 2010, she was arrested by New York City police and charged with petty larceny for shoplifting from the Sephora store on East 86th Street.[5][8][24] She was detained and later released.[25][26] Represented by attorney Michael F. Bachner, Giuliani took a plea deal to perform one day of community service and had her criminal record cleared after a probation period of six months.[14][27]

Political views

Despite coming from a prominent Republican family, Giuliani has supported Democratic candidates.[28] During the 2008 United States presidential election, while her father was seeking the Republican nomination, she joined a Facebook group supporting Barack Obama called One Million Strong for Barack, and posted on her profile that she was a "liberal."[29][30][31] Giuliani left the Facebook group after online activity was reported in the media.[32] She supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 United States presidential election, while her father was a vocal supporter of Donald Trump.[29][22][33] In 2016, when questioned about her political beliefs conflicting with her father's, she stated, "he knows and is fully comfortable with it and thinks I have a right to my opinion."[34][35][36]

On September 30, 2020, Giuliani tweeted a response to a tweet made by her father accusing Hunter Biden of being a liar. She stated, "I, for one, do not support spreading false gossip about a politician’s child."[37]

On October 15, 2020, Giuliani wrote a piece for Vanity Fair titled "Rudy Giuliani Is My Father. Please, Everyone, Vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris", calling for American voters to end Donald Trump's "reign of terror" and encouraging them to "elect a compassionate and decent president."[29][22][16] In response to her father being a Trump supporter, Giuliani stated, "I may not be able to change my father's mind, but together, we can vote this toxic administration out of office."[29][22] She went on to say, "if being the daughter of a polarizing mayor who became the president's personal bulldog has taught me anything, it is that corruption starts with 'yes-men' and women, the cronies who create an echo chamber of lies and subservience to maintain their proximity to power."[29][33] She accused the Trump administration of stoking "the injustice that already permeated" society, and criticized Trump's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and his policies that rolled back protections for the LGBTQ community, women, immigrants, people with disabilities, and people of color.[29][38][39] She went on to endorse former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris for the 2020 United States presidential election, and praised Biden's plans to combat climate change.[29][22][40] Giuliani later tweeted a photo of her and Harris.[34]

On November 24, 2020, Giuliani wrote a second piece for Vanity Fair, titled "Attention, Trumpworld: Self-Care Tips for Accepting the Reality That Trump Lost".[41]

She does not deserve my ill-thought quip or anyone else's snickering.

Tell her I'm sorry for that deleted post.

If anyone else wants to hammer me, here I stand...I can do no other.

I lived in New York City, in one of the most left wing and liberal precincts before and during the Giuliani vs Dunkin’s mayoral race and when I voted, by machine, the lever wouldn’t go to the Dinkins slot to click in?!! I called out to the people in charge and they came tried to get it to click in and they also could not make it work ??!!! So he ran to get help and a short while later came and told me it was “ok” “not a problem” ??!!! I was stunned but accepted it! And left feeling a bit “cheated” ... If it happens again anywhere I will demand a paper ballot and make sure it gets counted! Of course Giuliani won??!!!

Expand full comment

It used to be a lot worse in New Jersey, until they went to paper ballots that are fed into scanning machines.

One time someone threw a stink bomb into a voting hall, and everyone rushed out...except the incumbent Council Member.

He rushed in and repeatedly pulled the lever for himself until the smoke dissipated and people came back and saw what he was doing. They pulled the machine out, but the guy was re-elected anyway.

Another woman my wife knew was registered twice, due to County incompetence. So she voted twice a day, once in the morning, second in the evening, until someone noticed. She was slapped with a hefty fine and lost her right to vote.

By the way, I "followed" you on Substack, and admire you for sticking to the blue in Oklahoma.

In 1922, two of my grandfather's younger brothers saw a big full-page ad in the New York Daily News by the Tulsa, Oklahoma, Chamber of Commerce, seeking "small businessmen" to make their fortunes in welcoming Tulsa!

So out they went, both being pharmacists, hoping to strike it rich by pouring Cokes and selling Alka-Seltzer.

They found out two things:

1. The reason WHY Tulsa needed small business. Greenwood still looked like Hamburg after my British relatives in RAF Bomber Command got through with it in 1943.

2. If the Tulsa white men hated blacks, they didn't like Jews much better. They faced a LOT of discrimination.

Astonishingly, they're still there.

Grandpa was one of eight brothers and sisters. All born in New York City. Their father, Adolf "Wolf" Lippman, was an alcoholic, wife-beating tailor. First Lippman in America. He was drunk when he came ashore at Ellis Island.

The inspector asked him, "Are you a bigamist?"

Wolf said, "What's a bigamist?"

"It means you have two or more wives," explained the inspector.

"TWO WIVES?" Wolf yelled. "Isn't one bad enough?"

They stamped him, "Comedian," and let him in.

I guess his mind was in the gutter, too.

Yeah, but surely a guy who goes out with her at least once would have noticed the last name, and be capable of adding two and two and coming up with whatever the Party says it is.

I was just struck by Caroline putting something like that in a Vogue article on a very serious subject. Personally, I don't think she needed to or should have said it.

I take it that she doesn’t use the name Giuliani in the art world, where she works. Besides, we don’t know how many Giuliani’s there are in NYC. Could be more than you would think.

You're likely right.

I know nothing about Caroline Giuliani except that she is unhappily connected to her awful father. We don't choose our families, sadly. My father said, "It's a club we join without anyone asking us if we wanted to or not."

He also said, "You are required to LOVE your relatives...you are not required to LIKE them." He had a good point.

Actually, she may have been married, widowed or divorced, and went on using the marital name, just to avoid the obloquy.

Well, that was one of my more stupid posts. Would you like me to edit or delete it? I have offended you, and that makes me upset. I'm quite sorry.

I haven't trusted Rudy since many years ago when he announced during a nationally televised TV interview that he was divorcing his first wife. She was elsewhere listening and his statement was news to her! The story got interesting when she announced Rudy was no longer living in their house, which was the New York City's mayor's home. She refused to leave, so she lived there until Rudy's term was up.

Then there was the time after he was fondly called "America's Mayor" when news broke that he and his police commissioner shared an apartment paid for by NYC to entertain lady guests. NYC didn't know about their ('um) liaisons.

What he did to the two election workers who sued him was not only awful -- it was idiotic. No amount of money will ever heal the nightmare they have lived through. He has fallen from the epitome of a star New York hero to the lowest level possible. To be capable of such fraud and lying makes me wonder what illegal acts of his we have yet to learn . . .
