I'm a retired academic who taught graduate level tax accounting courses for more than 35 years. Jen did a great job explaining that the proposed national sales tax rate is 30%. If one of my students had come up with 23% using bogus math they would have gotten an F. The problem is I've seen numerous media, even the White House Twitter account, use the 23% which makes me say WTF! A tax is arrived at by multiplying the base ($100) by the rate (.3). If Republicans can't even do that basic calculation they should never attempt to write tax legislation. It's also important to remember that this 30% would also apply to rent payments (which are currently through the roof) and would be in addition to your local state/county/city sales tax rates. I live in St. Louis county so my combined local rate is 9.68% so that would make my combined sales tax rate almost 40%. And, state income taxes are deductible if you itemize your deductions on your Federal return but sales taxes are not deductible.
Of everything - big and bigger - that this R led House has already done … I think I am most infuriated with the re-institution of SMOKING in public areas of the Capitol. I nearly cried. because to me; it was less about smoking and more about flipping a finger to all of us who care about PUBLIC HEALTH. Who CARE that 500 plus people are still dying of COVID every day in the US. Thousands die from secondhand smoke every year. COVID already puts people in weakened states and lung damage and yet in their first week THIS is what they ‘accomplish’ & then go on Fox with that a$$hole and brag about the grand history of tobacco in the US … RACIST, ABLEIST, AGEIST, IGNORANT EGOMANIACS.
I am so furious.
They should be masking in that Capitol … but not only will those bastards never don a mask (including when they have COVID) …. because they don’t give a whit about the well being of others (hence PUBLIC health) … it would now interfere with their cigarettes and cigars.
My little Abby the bouncing puppy nearly knocked the TV off the wall watching every hit and bounce. Fitbit doesn’t care about tennis 🎾 but Abby wants a racket for her birthday. Next she’ll be wanting a sister to play with, because Fitbit just grabs the ball and hides it in the dressing room. No fun!
