Thank you for this. I hope this truth gets repeated as much as possible by you and other like-minded political nerds in media. If there were any House R's (allegedly at least a handful) who were actually interested in trying to restore their party to some semblance of pro-democracy, government-for-the-people sanity, then they could have banded together to do something during the Speaker vote, or at least the Rules vote. They could play the role of Manchin/Sinema in the House and actually wield tremendous power given the margins. So far, this supposedly less radical group of R's are mythical creatures, as you explain so well. Also, I've been a bit appalled to watch people like Byron Donalds, Lauren Boebert, and Marjorie Taylor-Greene being invited to "mainstream" media shows and being normalized. Even when the interviewer is pushing back on them about their lies, they are still spewing their nonsense, being given oxygen and legitimacy. Looking forward to your aptly named House of Horrors! Unfortunately, I'm sure there will be no shortage of material provided to you. As an aside, I am simply in awe that you have the versatility in your writing to go from the amazing, soulful Twofer Tuesday Joan Armatrading post last night to this blistering, spot on political post this evening. I'm so here for it!

It is insane, but I seriously doubt they will screw around with the debt ceiling, that did not work out very well for them the last time they did it. I think the last election showed, if we didn't know it before, how very important it is to vote. I support universal voting or, if you will, mandatory voting. I am sick and tired of folks not voting for whatever lame reason they have in their heads. I agree with you that there is no such thing as a moderate Republican, they are either ultra-right-wing, fanatical religious right, too much of a coward to do what is right or just plain in need of mental help. They are all traitors because they violate the oath of office they take every single day, some very single minute. It is a joke, not because they do it, but because they are never held accountable for doing it.; by accountable I mean either expelled or legally held accountable.

I already feel like I am going crazy with the onslaught of events in Congress.

Right on the money. I have been a political nerd since 6 yrs old and this R party is pathetic. They have to burn themselves down bc if Ds do anything or DOJ involved it will b tainted. They will eat their own and wld b funny if not for the strain on our country. It will happen but too damn slow. Enjoy your writing and thank you for doing this for us and our country.

this will continue until the quasi-democracy of the US is either destroyed or fundamentally reformed. Most of these seditionist election deniers are in Congress because of the gerrymandering that has been the pattern since the 80s and because of the huge "buy" of candidates by the wealthy enabled by the SCOTUS decisions of the last decades to get rid of pesky regulation of elections. Look at the praise given to the new 'Joe" Mccarthy This cabal is not elected. it is selected. only a small portion of the Republican members faced a real contest. So ask yourselves what will it take to make the necessary changes. and get the money out of the electoral system.

The GOP is on a cyclical downturn, but it doesn't feel that way for those of us who want leadership and above all accountability We're angry! So, they continue to use a performative stance all-in the service to those who want nothing more than to hurt the very people who put them there in the first place, mainly Donald. The New York Nassau County Republican party had the spine to do what Kevin McCarthy could not do. This is unsustainable. Thank you, Mary, your points are very explicit and concise. This will be our reality for now until the next election.

Not one of these people who dare call their party the 118th congress is fit for the title and in no way deserve to speak it from their lying treasonous mouths, watching this absurd chaotic lunacy rinse & repeat for a week was and absolute insult to the permanent injury and scars that they and Donald J Trump have inflicted upon our country, democracy and people

As usual, I admire your clear, concise, and Manjushri like articulation, cutting through illusion and delusion. I watch Lawrence O'Donnell, Glenn Kirschner, and a few trusted guests like Neal Katyal, Joyce Vance, etc. Would like to quote your piece if that is ok.

The Bright Spot Of The House Speaker votes was the staunch 212 democratic votes for Jeffries everytime. The Omnibus Bill pays for Govt Through September 2024, The Only Harmful Financial Issue left is debt ceiling. We must hunker down as we know These Senators won't vote for any house republican radical bills that come their way, So Let's not get caught up in the republican hate and opt out, wait for 2024. BLUE FUTURE 2023-2024
